The surgical facility is more important than most patients realize. The surgeon’s skill is the primary driver of outcomes, but the environment in which that surgeon operates affects safety in ways that go beyond individual surgical technique.
Why the Facility Matters
Infection control. Infectious keratitis — corneal infection after surgery — is rare but serious. Surgical centers with rigorous infection control protocols (sterile technique, equipment sterilization, environmental controls) have lower rates of this complication. Accredited facilities are regularly inspected for compliance with these protocols.
Equipment quality and maintenance. The laser equipment and diagnostic instruments at the facility must be calibrated, maintained, and operated by trained staff. A well-staffed, well-maintained facility produces more consistent results than one where equipment maintenance is inconsistent.
Emergency management. If a rare intraoperative complication occurs, the facility must have protocols, equipment, and trained staff to respond appropriately. Accredited facilities are required to maintain these capabilities.
What Accreditation Means
Ask specifically whether the facility is accredited by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) or The Joint Commission. Both conduct independent, unannounced inspections of facilities and verify compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.
A facility operating without recognized accreditation has not been independently reviewed for these standards. That is a meaningful gap.
How to Evaluate the Facility During Your Consultation
Observe:
- Cleanliness and organization of the clinical environment
- Whether staff are professional and knowledgeable
- Whether the equipment appears current and well-maintained
- Whether informed consent is treated as a substantive process
Ask directly: “Is this facility AAAHC or Joint Commission accredited?” This question belongs in any consultation as part of choosing an eye surgeon.
